Chemical Hazards in Our Backyards: Has Much Changed Since West, Texas?
Many people in the United States live in the shadows of large chemical and processing plants. As the second anniversary of the West, Texas explosion looms, a new report finds that much still needs to be done to protect our communities and first responders from chemical hazards.
April 17 marks the second anniversary of the West, Texas fertilizer facility explosion. The disaster killed 15 people – most of them first responders – and injured 200 more. The blast leveled nearby schools and a nursing home. Had it happened during school hours, it could have killed hundreds of children.
